A common aim for an evaluation is to inform the future direction of an initiative. Contemporary theory suggests that organisational learning and re-adjustment is best made using a strengths-based approach. Therefore, our approach to evaluation is strongly influenced by ‘Appreciative Inquiry’. The methodology we use assists the identification and development of visions of preferred futures and strategies for achieving them. By identifying current strengths we can construct a descriptive picture of the future against which to design the subsequent phases of an initiative. This approach is underpinned by a process (somewhat akin to mediation) that encourages positivity and invites stakeholders to listen to different opinions and different types of evidence and ultimately helps to build consensus and agency between stakeholders.
