Revise/Set Measures of Success
The logic model gives you an understanding of how you believe change will occur. It is like your conceptual model. However, it does not tell you how much of this change would be needed to consider an intervention successful. The outcome statements from the logic model are not specific in relation to timeframe or scale. For this reason, it is useful to specify in more detail what your performance expectations should be. In other words, “what would success look like” for you?
Measures of success are described in a number of different ways, depending on the organisational frameworks in place. They include:
- Objectives
- Performance indicators
- Targets
- Outputs and milestones
In some fields specific, measurable, and time-bound (SMART) targets are used to express an understanding of what success would look like. Evidence is then collected to determine whether you are on track to achieve these targets, which is an expression of your performance expectations. These targets are often used to help decide how to invest.
